Are Parabens Really A Big Deal?

by Rasha Hisham |

Are you the kind of person who checks the ingredients listed on any product before checking the price of a product? If you do so, congratulations, you could be saving your skin and body from several toxic products.

Even, if you don’t pay attention or glance through the ingredients section of any product before making your purchase, one common label that you may have come across is “Paraben Free”.

What are Parabens, And Why Is It Such A Big Deal!

Parabens are commonly used in beauty products as a preservative; they stop fungus, bacteria and other microbes from growing in your favourite products. If the product you are using contains methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben and isobutylparaben, it has parabens.

Exposure to parabens have been found to disrupt hormone function, and could thereby possibly increase the risk of breast cancer. Parabens have been known to multiply estrogen production, thus leading to an increased risk of tumors and possibly breast cancer.

A British Study in 2004 revealed that parabens were found in 18 of the 20 samples of tissues of breast tumors biopsies. This study did not directly conclude that parabens were the cause of cancer. However, research has also confirmed that majority of breast cancer tumors were present in the upper portion of the breast, close to your underarm. This has led to concerns being raised over the parabens present in the deodorants one may use.

Health Canada, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, have stated that paraben levels in cosmetics and other everyday product is not dangerous. The EU has enforced regulation around the concentration of certain parabens allowed in cosmetics.

Why Are We Worried

Parabens are present in several cosmetics, and personal care products. Application of these products on your skin on numerous occasions in a day and consistently over time will expose you to greater harm than good. Besides, with several great natural skincare products that are Paraben free, you have plenty of reasons to stay away from chemicals such as Paraben.

Lili Aromatherapy does not use parabens in any of our products. We care about you, You should too!
