Your symptoms are real - How to Use Essential Oils to Ease the Symptoms of PCOS

PCOS, an acronym for Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome. It is caused by an imbalance of reproductive hormones. As it is a syndrome, it has a range of symptoms from depression to cystic acne. Some common symptoms include irregular menstrual cycle, anxiety, weight gain, darkening of skin, and hormonal acne. 

Having PCOS myself, I understand first hand the range of symptoms that one can face with PCOS and the frustration of being unable to cope with those symptoms. At the end of the day there is no cure for PCOS, yet. But there are ways to ease and treat the symptoms associated with it.

Growing up, I never really fully understood that a lot of the emotional and health issues I was facing stemmed from, at the time undiagnosed, PCOS. I personally became interested in essential oils and aromatherapy as a way of reducing my PCOS related symptoms.

I have outlined ways I have incorporated essential oils into my daily life, which helped me deal with my PCOS. 

Reduce Stress, Depression, and Anxiety 

This was and is the most confusing symptom of PCOS for me. It took me a very long time to realize that there was nothing wrong me and that my feeling of hopelessness and depression stemmed from a hormonal imbalance. As I researched essential oils, one essential oil constantly appeared in all of the articles I read, as a way to ease anxiety and stress. That essential oil was Ylang Ylang Essential Oil. The inhalation of ylang ylang essential oil balances hormone cortisol, the imbalance of which is related to PCOS and causes mood swings, depression, and anxiety. 

Ways to Incorporate Ylang Ylang Essential Oil:

  • Add a few drops to your diffuser
  • Add a few drops into your bath salts 
  • Add a few drops to any room or linen spray

Reduce Sugar Cravings and Weight Gain

A large proportion of women diagnosed with PCOS have insulin resistance. This means their bodies do not breakdown sugar effectively, leading to blood sugar fluctuations, sugar cravings, weight gain, and possibly even diabetes. Cinnamon has been scientifically proven to reduce insulin resistance and therefore effectively reduce your sugar cravings and weight gain. Ways to Incorporate Cinnamon Essential Oil

  • Add it to an unscented body lotion
  • Add it to your diffuser
  • Dilute it with a carrier oil and place a drop of it on your wrist. Simply smell the cinnamon essential oil when you are having a strong sugar craving

Reduce Aches and Pains

One of the most controversial symptoms of PCOS is pain. Personally, every doctor I have been to has told me that the aches and pains in my lower abdomen are not a symptom of PCOS. However, most friends I have spoken to who have PCOS can attest to the aching and sometimes piercing pain in their lower abdomen. I am not a doctor, so maybe this isn't a symptom of PCOS. Regardless, essential oils have helped me reduce these aches and pains. The main essential oil I rely on for this is Geranium Essential Oil. It not only has a wonderful floral fragrance, but is also a known ovarian tonic. It has reduced the frequent aching sensation I feel in my lower abdomen.

Ways to Incorporate Geranium Essential Oil

  • Blend it into a unscented cream or carrier oil. Massage it into your lower abdomen and then place a heat pack on top of your lower abdomen.

As with anything, please consult your physician before incorporating this in to your routine. It is also very important to dilute essential oils with a carrier oil, lotion, or bath salt before using them. Even though essential oils are freely available, they are extremely potent and should be handled with care.
